Andrew Griffiths “Rumspringa”

posted in: PAST EXHIBITIONS | 0

Rumspringa is a term for adolescence used in some Amish communities and these fun, unemphatic, sometimes darkly comic paintings echo this sentiment both pictorially and in the manner of their making.

Containing diverse imagery, marooned pirates, a scalped toby jug and flying vegetables jostle for our attention, logic is suspended for a while and the laws of gravity turned on their head.

Several of the paintings employ a cartoon shorthand deliberately at odds with other more rendered passages of paint.
These synesthetic perceptions make concrete things that cannot readily be seen yet are immediately deciphered subtly jogging the viewer into the tacit acknowledgment that these are painted constructs.

Andrew Griffiths is a British artist living and working in Valencia, Spain.
